GVT had the pleasure of sending Gracey Gunderson of McIntosh and Hayden Shulstad of Red Lake Falls on an unforgettable journey to Washington, D.C. with the Foundation for Rural Service Youth Tour! As part of the FRS Youth Tour, students gained valuable insight into the telecommunications industry and had the opportunity to visit many of the historic and cultural landmarks in Washington, D.C. Gracey and Hayden have shared their experience from Washington, D.C. below.

“Thank you, Garden Valley, for sponsoring me on this incredible trip, definitely one of the highlights of my high school years! This experience is one I’ll remember for the rest of my life. One of my favorite parts was making new friends and exploring all around Washington, D.C. It was amazing to meet so many new people, including our wonderful chaperones, and to connect with others from all over the country. Getting the chance to see so many important landmarks and places that we don’t typically see in our rural areas really opened my eyes. It reminded me how much small towns like ours contribute to the bigger picture of this country. It may have been hot, but it was absolutely worth it, especially for the social events and the unforgettable memories made with people from all across the U.S. Thank you again for making this incredible opportunity possible!” said Gracey Gunderson.

“Participating in the FRS Youth Tour of Washington, D.C. was an unforgettable experience that deepened my understanding of our nation’s government and history. Through engaging conversations with local government representatives, I gained firsthand insight into the political process—insight that has inspired me to stay informed and involved in my community.

Our journey began with a tour of the U.S. Capitol, where history and democracy come to life. That evening, we enjoyed a scenic ferry ride along the beautiful Potomac River, a perfect ending to a powerful first day. On the second day, we had the incredible opportunity to meet with the head of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and learn about future plans for broadband expansion in rural Minnesota. It was a meaningful discussion that directly related to the challenges and opportunities faced by our community.

Later, we explored Mount Vernon, the historic home of George Washington, and spent the evening visiting the iconic memorials in downtown D.C., each one a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for our country. On the final day, we toured several of the National Museums and visited Arlington National Cemetery, where we paid our respects to the men and women who gave their lives in service.

This experience, made possible by Garden Valley Technologies, allowed me to witness the foundations upon which America was built. It has not only broadened my perspective but will also strengthen my commitment to civic engagement and community service.” said Hayden Shulstad.
